The Dog is Busy Having Hotel Breakfast

Solo Exhibition by Devon Pin-Yu Chen

For Immediate Release

Devon Pin-Yu Chen, a Taiwan-born, New York- based artist, presents The Dog Is Busy Having Hotel Breakfast, a new installation of ceramic sculptures exhibition at All Bout Clay, New York, on view from April 11 to May 11, 2026.

The exhibition centers on a dog as a protagonist - a guide who leads us through the staged space of a hotel, raising an uncomfortable question: what class of being gets to have a vacation? Who is entitled to sit down and enjoy a hotel breakfast?

By casting a dog in this role, the artist unsettles the boundaries between owner and pet, privilege and dependence. The hotel space - a manufactured comfort, a temporary luxury - becomes a vessel for examining class and belonging. Within it, quieter forms of companionship emerge : a cat sealed inside a box, a metal pencil case - silent travel companions that suggest something carried, contained, yet never quite at home.

The exhibition extends into the cosmology of Taiwanese folk belief. During Ghost Month, when the gates of the underworld open, hungry ghosts roam the world of the living - unable to rest, unable to be fed. These figures ask the same question from the other side: who is seated at the table? Who is left outside?
